Also you MUST log into the windows machine as the UserID you set up in samba to access the shares. (i.e. you did:

smbpasswd -a joeuser -p password,

then you must log into the Windows box as:
Joeuser

with the password 'password'). post your smb.conf file. Make sure you have your workgroup configured correctly.

Regardless, the Linux box should be broadcasting it's name on the network to populate the Network Neighborhood listing on the Windows 98 machine, even if smbpasswd hasn't been setup yet.

Ensure that your Samba daemon is running (you can always use smbclient, even if your Samba daemon isn't running): '/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb status'. Ensure that your Windows 98 machine and Linux machine are both in the same workgroup.

You do not need DNS or WINS for such a basic environment, and can utilize the NetBIOS broadcasts to maintain name resolution as far as Samba/Network Neighborhood is concerned.

you also need to be sure the workgroup in the smb.conf is the same as you workgroup in the windws machine.

Didn't I just say that?

'Ensure that your Windows 98 machine and Linux machine are both in the same workgroup.'

Guys,
10X for the quick replay.
All the things you said are setup correctlly.

What i added was to turn off the ipchains and iptables,
As i saw in other threads that could lead to firewall problems,
and oops it works the win98 find my linux server.

Well now i am without firewall and i am planing to run it back.
do i need both iptables and ipchains ??

how i set them for a new rules ??

thanks again !

is that place for oracle questions ??

Use "lokkit" in RedHat - for samba make sure that ports 137, 138 & 139 are open.

RedHat 7 & 8 == kernel 2.4 == iptables
RedHat 6 == kernel 2.2 == ipchains
RedHat 5 == kernel 2.0 == ipfwadm

Because you're probably using RedHat 7 (only one with native support for either), stick with iptables. ipchains is only kicking around for legacy support.

Try this:

Reenable your firewall: '/etc/rc.d/init.d/iptables start'
Add some rules (yourself) to allow smb:
'iptables -t filter -I INPUT -p TCP --dport 137:139 -j ACCEPT'
'iptables -t filter -I INPUT -p UDP --dport 137:139 -j ACCEPT'

or, if you know that only the 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 network should access smb (for example), enter these, instead:

'iptables -t filter -I INPUT -p TCP -s 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 --dport 137:139 -j ACCEPT'
'iptables -t filter -I INPUT -p UDP -s 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 --dport 137:139 -j ACCEPT'

Test this out. If after adding the above rules, thing start to work, save them: 'iptables-save > /etc/sysconfig/iptables'

I have some experiece with Oracle, but I hate it. I'd much rather use MySQL, even though it's *supposedly* not as powerful.

Thumbs up

Ok,
I am running to try the new rules right now.

I suppose 137,138,139 port numbers are saved for SAMBA or so ??

Any way its LAN connection so i will allow any one who has cable to use my computer.

I am using Oracle not for his powerful but for his stability !!
( I was using MS Access till now ).

Now on Stable OS as Linux and stable DB as oracle, i hope no items will go for a walk from the warehouse :-).

Still i need to export/import my DB tables from Access to Oracle.
(that's why i asked for Oracle help)

So thanks Guys for the Linux help you gave me, and probably will.

thanks
