Hi. I have recently installed mandrake 9 on my pc... the internet works fine on my dualboot xp but i cannot seem to set the network settings right in linux. Would someone beable to help me set it up so i can use the net throught linux. my router is a DI-604 (dlink). like were do i find the dhcp address and the gateway ip etc. a step by step instruction is requested
I'm not a Linux expert by any means but you're are going to have to either set a static IP address on your Linux box with the DLINK listed as the gateway and DNS server or set your IP address to dynamic. I don't particularly know the files that need to be edited for this. If you are on a linux desktop you should be able to easily config this info. On your XP box you can do a ipcofig from the command line to see what IP and subnet mask you have. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will help you out!
i'm having a similar problem. i was going to start another thread, but i thought i'd add on to this one:
i have a d-link 704P and can only access the router when manually setting the IP.
the router's address is: 192.168.0.1
i manually set my address to 192.168.0.101, mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1 and i'm all good.
but when i set my pc to automatically get ip via dhcp, i notice the router gives me an address of 192.168.2.100 with which i can not access the router. fwiw, i can ping the router, but not access the internet, nor the router's config panel.
when i boot into xp, i get an address of 192.168.0.100, with no troubles accessing the intarweb.
i'm wondering if the threadstarter and i are experiencing the same problem?
edit:
to iamzzzzleeping:
can you access the control panel that allows you to configure eth0? if you can, then you can do something similar to the manual set up i did above. if the router is connected to your isp, then the router's status should list the DNS servers. take note of them becuase you will need to enter them in the dns configuration.
i don't use mandrake, so i'm not terribly familiar of how to access those settings quickly and easily.
Ok... i didnt no what n e of u were talking about so i fiddled until it worked... now i need to no how to get my printer working. Lexmark Z75. Thanls for all of your help guys. Linux is great.
I think you must have more than one DHCP server on your network. You mentione an XP box I believe. You might have Internet Connection Sharing enabled on it. On your DLink you can also check the DHCP range in the management tool for it.
