Volume levels always go lower on either the right or left side (usually the left)

I'm running Linux Mint XFCE. When using any pair of headphones the volume always goes lower on one side, usually the left. I have tried adjusting the levels in alsamixer but they were already equal. In the volume control I unlocked both channels and raised the quiet channel but it either does nothing or the volume goes back to being wrong after a few seconds. I have tried locking them like this and leaving them unlocked.

This happens with any headphones. I don't have speakers to test.

I have found no solutions online. In fact, I have found no one else with this bug online so it might be pretty new. Any ideas how to fix it?
