Talking Ubuntu error on boot - UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on an ASUS Zenbook UX303UA 13.3-Inch FHD Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD. Ive had a series of boot problems with it over the last year. Initially it came preloaded with Win 10. I dual booted it with Mint and then decided to go with Ubuntu 18.04 with no Win presence at all. The machine was basically always on with an external monitor and laptop cover closed when not in use.
I installed VS Code on it and used it to build Docker stuff and a blockchain javascript project and did IoT coding on esp32 via Arduino IDE. It all seemed to work fine. After one session I closed VS Code and the display flashed and VS Code just disappeared with no traces of it anywhere. Rebooting I got the Grub menu and it automagically booted into the tty1 login. I wound up reinstalling 18.04 and VS Code, python3 and Brave Browser, node, Mongo and maybe QGIS. I reinstalled Arduino GUI and it appeared to work. Arduino docs said to reboot for the dialout group addition to take effect.
On reboot the Arduino IDE was not functioning - got a wait cursor and then nothing. The Updater GUI popped up and I OKed everything except for Brave and the Libre suite. About 2/3 of the way through the updater popped up an error message which said something to the effect that it encountered an Unhandleable error. I closed it and on reboot everything looks totaly hosed.

When I get the Grub menu it boots automagically into tty1 login. From the tty1 login I do an Update and it completes with no errors. If I choose any of the Grub menu options I get an error dump :
/dev/sda2 UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; Run fsck manually
...
fsck exited with status code 4

after the BusyBox message the display shows (initramfs) and the machine freezes

I have noticed instances of referrals to sda2 and sda3, the screen message prior to the login prompt refereces sda3. So I'm wondering if there are leftovers from my dual win/Mint boot days or is it something else. I did UNIX work a coupla gazillion years ago but been doing time in the M$ world last decade or so and now doing a lotta Linux especially Rasberry Pi Raspbian

And the ASUS tty1 login show 18.04.5 LTS and Grub shows 18.04.4 LTS.

Running fsck as root fails.

Thoughts ???
