Kevin was talking about the kernel source, technically you don't need the whole thing, but SuSe doesn't believe in bite sizes. When you have the host_ap module installed and working, feel free to zap that 140+Mb of kernel source:

rm -rf /usr/src/linux

Or, of course use yast2 to do it... which will keep your rpm database from getting confused.

Oh, LQ is having some MySQL db issues, no big deal, please stand by, etc... should be long cleared up by now.

Cheers,

Finegan

Downloaded kernel source and installed fine. Downloaded and installed Host-ap compiled and installed fine. Ran ifconfig up seems fine,but anytime I run iwconfig(any command ) I get SET failed on device wlan0 : Function not implemented.

I followed instructions exactly as written, what am I doing wrong?

You still have the wlan-ng.conf file in /etc/pcmcia/

At least, that's a guess, you'll also have to hard restart pcmcia in order to get cardmgr to reread and recache the new hostap.conf file.

I was hoping getting up early and trying a few things would give some success, but SuSE was not so forgiving this early morning.

I have got host-ap running according to output from console. Following output is from multiple commands listed previously.

Did you reset your computer? I tried to do a hard restart of pcmcia like fin suggested, but that command didn't work. Must be a suse thing. Rebooting the computer does the same thing.

I see a few things. First off, is the essid of your SMC router "radio reciever"? If it is, that's fine. Secondly, wlan0 is set as master. Do a iwconfig wlan0 mode managed. Also, is your router running wep? If it is you need to add the encryption key. I'm not sure what exactly the command is, hit iwconfig --help.

You might want to write that script now, because you're going to need to reset all that crap every time you reboot / insert the card.

All of this is assuming that iwconfig works after the reset.

Keep us informed.

This will work better, call it whatever you want and just put a call to it in rc.local.... which in friggin SuSe is:

/etc/rc.d/boot.local

Code:
#!/bin/bash

ETHDEV=wlan0

if ifconfig $ETHDEV >&/dev/null ; then
        echo "Configuring wirless Junk."
        # whack the old lease if the device thinks it has one.
        dhcpcd $ETHDEV -k >&/dev/null
        ifconfig $ETHDEV up
        iwconfig $ETHDEV mode managed
        iwconfig $ETHDEV essid whatever
        # Uncomment the below if you like WEP and cheese.
        # iwconfig $ETHDEV enc 2132132132
        dhcpcd $ETHDEV
else
        echo "Tain't no Wireless Junk."
fi

# Damn this script sucks.
boot.local runs last on boot, as root, so if you have the card in at boot then it'll get applied and only if you have the card in. If you pop the card in after the fact you'll have to su and run this kid by hand, I would have to look at SuSe's pcmcia mangling to figure out how to get it applied on the fly... maybe if I'm bored later.

Cheers,

Finegan

Hey fin, everything works fine, so long as I lave encryption off. I turned encryption on at the router and entered the 128 bit key that I set using iwconfig wlan0 enc <key>

Suddenly it stops working, can't ping out until I take the key off and kill wep at the router. iwconfig reveals that I'm getting errors in the form of "rx invalid crypt". Any idea why? I'm guessing that the speedstream router is responsible, but maybe I'm missing something?

By the way, thanks for the new and improved script

Walkthrough of configuring prism2 under SuSE 8.1

I'm working for a group using a SuSE 8.1 derivative for a beta project ... first time I'd used SuSE. I needed to get a Linksys WPC11 up and running ... I've used prism2 devices under a bunch of distros and its always a bit of a pain to learn the differences in configuration.

I condensed the following from this thread and my own experiences with this driver tonight. Using it will hopefully allow someone with a prism2/2.5/3 card to get it running in SuSE with the drivers that are supplied by default, without adding other drivers like HostAP and without needing to reconfigure to use the ORiNOCO drivers. Hopefully it will be useful.

NOTE: I didn't go into how to configure all of the parameters in wlan.conf ... too much extra typing and the file is fairly well commented.

...

...
NOTES:
1) The PCMCIA service makes it REAL easy to know if you'll need to read the rest of this note to configure your card ... plug in your card, wait for the beeps and then do this command from a terminal: 'lsmod | grep prism2'. If you get no results, you aren't using the prism2 driver (and hopefully, but I haven't tested since I only have prism cards, you can use the YaST2 configurator to setup your wireless settings). If you -do- see the prism2 driver loaded from the lsmod command, read on.

2) If you are connecting to a completely open Access Point (ie, one that broadcasts its SSID, does not use WEP, and has no IP or MAC restrictions and is generally the least secure network on the planet) then your card will "just work". If not you will need to configure the settings ... see next note for why thats a problem.

3) This guide assumes you only have one 802.11b card in use. If you have more than one you may run into problems.
...

* The PCMCIA service will recognize and automatically insert the proper modules, no YaST2 is needed for this.

* YaST2 simply doesn't work for configuring 802.11b settings, at least not for this particular chipset. No combination seemed to work. I believe the problem is because the "prism2_cs" doesn't work well with the "iwconfig" command that YaST2 scripts want to use to configure the wireless device (I -know- that prism2_* modules don't work with iwconfig, I'm just not sure that is the only problem)

* You want to edit these files:

REMINDER: back up the files so you can revert ... my practice is to copy any system file I'm about to edit to a new file of the same name with an extension of ".orig" ... ie, "/etc/wlan/wlan.conf" is copied to "/etc/wlan/wlan.conf.orig". If you have already edited it and want to keep the first edited version, copy your edit to a file with the last modified date appended ... like "/etc/wlan/wlan.conf.20030801"

- /etc/wlan/wlan.conf

... Reading the comments in this file make it fairly easy to figure out what to do. If you have a specific SSID to connect to (only good reason you wouldn't is if you are roaming more than one AP -and- those APs broadcast their SSIDs) then edit 'SSID_wlan0=""' to 'SSID_wlan0="[Your SSID]"' (replace [Your SSID] with ... the name of your SSID).

... Now that that is done it will be expecting any additional configuration for this SSID to be in a file named "/etc/wlan/wlancfg-[Your SSID]" (again, replace [Your SSID]). For example, if my SSID was "GeoffLAN", then I would need to create a configuration file called "/etc/wlan/wlancfg-GeoffLAN". The best way to do this is to copy (not move) the file "/etc/wlan/wlan-DEFAULT" so that you have a template to edit.

* When finished editing the "/etc/wlan/wlan-[Your SSID]" settings, you should be able to simply remove your card and reinsert it to get a 802.11b link.

* Ok, we've got the link setup ... but we don't have a TCP/IP configuration. For this you'll need to creat a file called "/etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan0". It should like like either (lines between " marks):

"
BOOTPROTO='dhcp'
STARTMODE='hotplug'
"

If you are using DHCP. If you are not using DHCP, use this for ifcfg-wlan0:

"
BOOTPROTO='static'
STARTMODE='hotplug'
BROADCAST='192.168.0.2'
IPADDR='192.168.0.2'
NETMASK='255.255.255.0'
NETWORK='192.168.0.0'
"

Changing the IP information to match your network.

* Remove the card, wait a second, then reinsert the card. If all went well, the command "ifconfig" should show a device called "wlan0" and the command "iwconfig wlan0" should show you the wireless statistics for that device.
