Swtich form cdrom to laptop

I have external cdrom and floppy drives for my laptop. I can access whichever one was connected when I boot up, but I can't switch and mount the new one without rebotting. Is there a way to detect new hardware without rebooting? (preferably from the command line)

Thanks,

BFK

Have you tried unmounting whatever is plugged in, switching it and the mounting?

ie umount /dev/cdrom (or whatever it is)
mount /dev/floppy

If I do that the device is not there in /dev. If I boot up with the cdrom attached, I can remove it, attach the floppy drive, run hwbrowser, and then moun the floppy. If I don't boot with the cdrom attached though, I can't get linux to recognise it.
