Unhappy SuSe 9.2 Pro ACPI Problem?

Hi there,

I'm very new to these forums, so this post is pretty much a shot in the dark as to whether someone can help me out in anyway - either by some in-depth instructions or a general idea as to what I can do.

I have just installed SuSe 9.2 on an Acer laptop as part of a Dual-Boot system with Windows XP. The operating system seems to work nicely on this system, and installing a couple of extra applications like LimeWire and Firefox were very easy.

The one lingering problem I have is SuSe not being able to detect the amount of battery power remaining left on my laptop. The only thing that saves any work that's open at that time is a tiny blinking 'low battery' light on the front of the laptop. If I notice it's flashing, then nine times out of ten I can get to a power socket quick enough - if I don't, then it just dies horribly.

When I look in the Power Management part of KDE Control Panel, it says that ACPI was partially installed and that I should install 'AC Adaptor' and something along the lines of 'Control Mode Battery', then recompile the kernel.

Given the fact that I have been a Windows user for getting on for 8 years , I am finding it very difficult to find a way around this.

Any help on this would be appreciated!

Many thanks,

Nick

The most likely scenario is that you don't have the proper 'modules' or drivers loaded for acpi to be able to get readings. If you could issue the command 'lsmod' as root and post up the results here, we can begin to troubleshoot.

Another thing to try:
Code:
cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
If 'state' exists, you already have support enabled, but something's awry with SuSE's acpi implemenation. If it's not there, then we know you don't have support enabled.

Thanks for your help so far, I hope I can have a battery meter working soon!

Looks like you've got the module loaded. What is listed in /proc/acpi ?

Listed in /proc/acpi is the following:

ac_adapter, alarm, battery, button, debug_layer, debug_level, dsdt, embedded_controller, event, fadt, fan, info, power_resource, processor, sleep, thermal_zone and wakeup

I also did ls in /proc/acpi/battery and there is nothing listed in there,

Thanks for help so far :-)
