you have an audio cable running from your CD to an audio input on your soundcard?

Of course that depends on distribution... honestly, start a new thread and be verbose about your problem, including distro, model of laptop, etc.

Sorry, hectic couple of days. However, I am kinda at a loss. If the cdplayer is unmuted under the mixer, and under the GUI's sound server, then I don't know.

If you've got one onboard, you may want to try a command line cdplayer, like workbone, that'll make certain that there's no abstraction between you and the cdrom.
