Linux on ASUS T100ta.

Hya,

I am trying to install Linux on ASUS T100ta. As my profile reads, I am a Debian user.

1. Debian 64 bit: (jessie) USB stick was not recognized.

2. Ubuntu 64 bit: somebody else installed. But for me, installer chokes.

3. Ubuntu (14.10) 32 bit: I followed this thread. With USB wifi stick, installation went well. But sound does not work. Built in wifi works (after firmware update), but unstable. Battery monitor does not show at all.

3.1 sound, after installing firmware alsactl --file path/to/file/T100_B.state restore
(read this thread) But left sound comes from right, right from left.

3.2 Battery monitor: Upgrading to 15.4 solved this problem.

3.3 wifi. After upgrading 15.4, situation went worse.
Problem is "brcmfmac: brcmf_add_if: ERROR: netdev:wlan0 already exists "
This thread shows the solution. (echo on > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/sdhci-acpi/INT33BB\:00/power/control ) But I was unable to change status to on (from auto). Even "sudo" I got a "permission error"

I am still working on. I will update.

cheers

Self reply
workaround of 3.3
Code:
sudo echo on > ....
results in permission denied.

However,
Code:
sudo bash
echo on > .....
exit
works.

cheers

Bad news.

The trick above works only when brcmfmac module is blacklisted on boot.

If the module is loaded on boot, it is possible to change control status (after removing modules), but wireless interface is unable to establish connection (searching forever),

I installed Kubuntu 14.04(64 bit) on my T100ta using the grub(32 bit) workaround. Had to compile grub from a githib repo though, here's the tutorial I followed.
https://github.com/lopaka/instructio...asus-x205ta.md
I also created a Ubuntu 15.04 usb which boots fine but didn't install it because I was having the same T100 issues during a live session.

Out of interest have you tried the 'magic stick' for the T100

Thanks

Hya

Thanks for your comment.

The 64 bit I tried is 15.04. Probably I should try 14.04 64bit.

I have not tried "magic stick"

+++ update of my current 15.04 status +++
I ran into (probably) kernel freeze twice. The best guess I can make is power (acpi) event triggered.

cheers

Another trouble.

Display (VGA) connected through HDMI is not functional.

It works when it is connected on boot, but everything goes to external one. Otherwise it is not working at all.

In either cases, xrandr can detect only one display, which is functional.

Xorg.0.log is not quite helpful.

The cable I used is ASUS one, (90-XB3900CA00060-)

I've not touched hdmi yet so can't comment but hey I got the internal wifi card working today.
Followed this thread post number 12
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2276504&page=2
and replaced the brcmfmac43241b4-sdio.bin file with their one.
Seems stable.

To get hdmi working you have to create or edit .asoundrc file.

Hya,

As I ran into system freeze so many times, I replaced 32bit one with 64bit (ubuntu 14.10).

With 14.10
WiFi: it can detect network, but unable to establish connection.
sound: it works after firmware and t100_B.status trick. But quality is VERY unsatisfactory.
battery monitor: not working.

Then it is upgraded to 15.04
WiFi: looks good so far.
sound: works, but still in POOR quality.
battery monitor: looks good.

cheers.

PS
I also tried to use USB-ether adaptor. It uses ASIX chipset, which does NOT work.
ASIX supplys driver. see the file here. But needs adjustment, -Wno-date-time and target directory. I am still working on this

Hya

After apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade, system choked. (It looks like kernel freeze or something similar)
Then no boot again.

For the time being, I will forget this tablet.

Thanks

After a long interval, I tried to resume installation.

Following this instruction, installation DVD image was created on an USB stick.

Using non-graphical menu, process went without network setup.

So far, no trouble,

I will update.

First of all, hats off for documenting this so that others may benefit.

Secondly, I am never getting that hardware!!!

Hope you'll get it up and running eventually.

Best regards,
HMW

Sounds like you're getting it up and running.

One issue you may run into is the touchpad on the base. If you do, upgrade to the backports kernel, it should work properly with that. Also, the wireless is more stable with the newer, backports kernel (make sure to also get the newer, backports firmware if you do this).
