Linux freezes on partition check

OK, I'm trying to install linux on my Compaq Presario 900 laptop and it freezes on Partition Check hda. I'm trying to dual boot Windows Xp and linux. When I installed windows xp I partitioned the drive to leave almost 4GB for linux. I did nothing with that partition, I left it alone. I've tried installing Red Hat 7.3 and Mandrake 8.2 with the same problem. I don't know if it makes a difference, but my laptop's hard drive is a Fujitsu. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Delete the partition you created for Linux and run the installation when there's free space. Don't know if that's the reason, but it's worth trying.
