Kernel error during install on Toshiba Satellite L300

G'day all,

I have just become the proud owner of a Toshiba Satellite L300/C02 Laptop. In the first day of owning it I've tried to load a few different live distributions for testing.
Fedora 9
openSUSE 10.3
Kubuntu 7.04
Ubuntu 6.06, 7.04, 8.04
Edubuntu 6.06
DSL-N
LinuxMint 5 w/fluxbox

I have a few others left to try but I am encountering Kernel crashes and difficulty detecting hardware. As well as a BusyBox message, I haven't completly understood. Is that the kernel crashing and rolling back to an older stable version? The lack of sound and WiFi at the moment aren't all that important, they can be overcome (hopefully).

Update: I have just successfully booted into Kubuntu 7.10 live-cd.

Is there anything obvious that I should be looking for? Especially with the kernel crash error? All I have found with the help of Google is that Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 should work on this laptop. And that kernel 2.6.25 & 2.6.26rc4 work, which is not totally correct as the Fedora 9 I am trying and failing to run has 2.6.25...

Or should I give another distro a go? LinuxMint and Puppy have been recommended. I am just waiting on the DVD to turn up. As downloading CDs on dial up is too time consuming. :P

Custom Kernel

Why not try building a custom kernel, and use it for the different distros, shouldn't be too problematic, and will give you a crash-course in what hardware your new toy has...
