HP pavilion dv1175us - linux - no go..?
hello all,
just purchased a hp pavilion dv1175us..
nice laptop with everything you could possibly wish for connecting to the outside world..
that is - running windows..
but i want to install suse 9.1 as well - so:
- clicking the suse 9.1 distro into the drive
- rebooting
- sitting back to see the distro booting up for installation
- and then:
- waiting
- waiting
- waiting..
- aha..! - something happens..!
- it starts asking for language etc..
- then analyzing..
- waiting
- waiting
- waiting..
- hhmmmmrrrhhhffff
- after another 20 minutes..
- recognizes everything - and is ready for partitioning..
- but: grief - ohh - grief - no software packages found - and none to be found - all blank..!?
i've seen other threads about 'designed for windows xp' - laptops..
so - this is apparently one of them..?
is it possible to get around this topic..?
i already did a full format - re-partitioning - and re-installed win xp..
but still no luck with installing suse..
You may find some help here: DV1000 Forums or here: X1000 Forums . Obviously, the DV1000 Forums would be more pertinant, but the X1000 Linux forum is more active and both models share many of the same components.
In answer to your question (Windows only?): No. Linux should run just fine. I remember booting the Suse 9.1 CD on my Desktop PC and it was sloooooow. My advice: Forget Suse. I use SimplyMepis on my Compaq X1000. It was an amazingly easy install and it was the only Distribution that automatically recognized all my hardware (Intel IPW2200 wireless card included).

mlmurray..
thanks..
after numerous attempts - i finally succeeded in installing suse..
how embarrassing to find out that my dvd distro was faulty..
when i did an install from my cd distro it worked..
as stated many times in various forums: never give up - there usually is a valid - and sometimes simple - reason for things not working..
if you are determind you will eventually find out - and what a joy when it happens..
yep now for more bad news about your laptop. the hp notebooks have a bios lockout that make you only able to use the wireless minipci card that came with it, or another, but only purchased from hp. and the price is alot higher. if you ahve the intel 2200, then you are doing alright, but if you ahve a broadcom, that sucks! unless you have better luck with ndiswrapper, the broadcom is a crappy wireless card under linux. either way, you cant have any fun with like, like run kismet. the main idea here is that hp wants you to use windows. and buy hp. and the only way to keep up is the keep getting bios upgrades from hp, and keep the maintenance agreement with them. otherwise, you are up (you know what) creek without a boat. have fun with that.

i have the intel pro wireless 2200bg in my hp pavillion - and it works fine.. i've tried it all over the world - it works..
buuut - i have to admit - not as easy to use as the windows setup..
the only thing that don't work is the dial-up modem.. i can't get it to work - but it's only a few places in the world where they have only dial-up - so it has not bothered me..yet..
most places have WiFi and LAN..
does it not "see" the modem? if you look at dmesg, do you not see the modem? it could just be that you havent configured it. usually modems work, no matter what. hm but i couldnt get mine to work either. hm..... hmmm...... ill try mine again. your right, there is wireless or ethernet or some sort of other connection everywhere.
