@aus9... Thanks for jumping in here and helping the OP. Your assistance has been outstanding and I've even learned a couple things while reading your t-shooting methods.
OP should click to add rep to you on quite a few of these posts in this thread.
Folks like you make LQ.org the great place that it is.
I think modifying asoundrc files kinda extreme before making sure pauvcontrol and alsa settings are taken of first.
Hope some backups of original were made.
The disable auto-mute was just a test . In case hardware was stuck. I keep a external usb powered / sound jack for input external small speaker for my chromebook running AntiX so Kubuntu is not my forte either. Since I am kinda KDE dyslexic.
Hope someone else with personal knowledge of Kubuntu 19 steps in here You are close though.
I'd leave you with my .asoundrc off of my chromebook running AntiX linux. But
Code:
harry@biker:~
$ cat .asoundrc
cat: .asoundrc: No such file or directory
harry@biker:~
harry@biker:~
$ sudo udatedb
[sudo] password for harry:
sudo: udatedb: command not found
harry@biker:~
$ sudo updatedb
harry@biker:~
$ locate .asoundrc

He describes something awfully similar with headphone jack and ALC256. He even points to a solution that I didn't quite understood.
Do you guys think it could help, evev though it's FreeBSD related? And, more to the point, what am I supposed to do in order to try that?

I sure did. I've been asking this around in other places. Here is actually the first one where I get comprehensive and in depth guidance.
Looks like your link means tweaking the kernel. Edit: Take that with a grain of salt. I might be wrong. So if me.
I'd try another kernel.
It would be easier.
In apt distros. I have installed and uninstalled kernels with no ill effects. I uninstall the ones I don't use use anymore and leave 2 good working backups.
Edit: But I'd wait for other members to look at and comment on what I posted first.
PA volume control is low why not raise its volumes....for the detected USB Plugandplay (PnP) device
Can you see another device in alsamixer command when you press F6.
Ego wise I have turned off rep so do not need any rep points
Edit
I failed to confirm your headphones were usb. But that also means, once you confirm you can see a second device in alsamixer.....that your link for the guy with the Alc256 will NOT apply to you.
The reason is I am fairly sure...the usb will have its own mixer and its mixer levels are independent of your onboard sound
So it will help to show....when usb headphones are inserted to see the result of
Code:
aplay -l
Once you have raised mixer levels....as a test....pull out headphones....wait say 30 seconds then insert and check mixer levels.
If they have not saved....I can show you how to save mixer levels for card1 (usb) and we can use a command....initially to restore them.
If all that works for you....no promises...but it would be smarter to create an udev rule specific to your usb device....that on detection...automates your mixer levels.
Remember this will not be needed if your test of pulling and inserting usb shows mixer levels are saved.

The USB-C adapter works fine and it is detected as another device in alsamixer. But I since there isn't anything wrong with it, I don't think it needs fiddling.
I use just as a last resort, but it's cumbersome and far from ideal, hence why I'm invested on getting the native headphone jack, the one in the laptop itself, working.
All right, from most stores you can buy a cheap 3.5mm ear buds to eliminate broken cable in headphones. Or do existing 3.5mm headphones work ok on another computer or windows etc?

The headphones work perfectly on Windows, PS4 and my smartphone (and I even tested it with a borrowed pair to the same results: low and distorted sound). Everything points to some unsupported hardware quirk, IMO.
Usb headphones work ok
3.5mm with unmuted and volumes raised produce low sound.
So I lack the experience to diagnose if you are using phonon...which is a fontend a bit like pulseaudio.
Therefore you are welcome to post on the ubuntu forums
Or someone else pop in with suggestions.
Thanks for your help!
I had a try with Ubuntu official foruns and AskUbuntu already, but my questions were, well, ignored. To be fair, I really only found help here, so I'll stick around to see if anyone have more ideas.
