Has Anyone Gotten Tumbleweed Networking Working On An Inspiron 1545?

Yes... it's an older Inspiron. It was running an older OpenSUSE version (13.2) for a long time and I decided that I'd like to keep this laptop running a while longer but with a recent OS. Seems like that might have been a bad idea. (The new OS, that is.)

I installed Tumbleweed 20190320 without any issues. Except... when I added a connection for the wireless network, I could not get the available connections menu to even show the newly added wireless network connection; the wired connection shows up just fine (didn't work but it showed up).

Examining the boot.msgs file showed that there were missing firmware files for the Broadcom chipset. After tracking those down and getting them installed I was able to get connected to the local wifi service. Fired up zypper to load the 600+ updates (that have come out in the past couple of weeks!) and walked away for a while.

Of course, all those updates came with a mandatory reboot. After the reboot, the wifi connectivity is down again. If I'd known ahead of time that these updates were going to destroy a working system... Grrr. I'm seeing the configured connection in the drop-down menu of wifi networks. I'm interpreting this as a good sign that the drivers/firmware are OK as I wasn't seeing the local wifi network before getting the firmware problem squared away. Utilities like "iwspy" are seeing the "wlan0" device. However, when I attempt to make a connection, all I'm getting is messages on the GUI telling me "Configuring interface", "Waiting for authorization", etc. but never a connection. Eventually, I see the familiar "Last used N hours ago" message and the button next to the menu listing returns to "Connect".

A chunk from the /var/log/messages file (below) contains some odd wifi-related messages, i.e., authentication seems to be occuring and, suddenly, "deauthentication" (whatever that is) occurs. The reason being either "DEAUTH_LEAVING" or "4WAY_HANDSHAKE_TIMEOUT". Some items out on the 'Net say that this last one has something to do with the password not being accepted. I think that would be almost impossible as the wifi connection was working with the same password prior to running zypper and rebooting. (Surely patches aren't now touching user configurations.) I've since deleted the wireless connection and redefined it, verified the security passphrase nine way to Sunday, etc.. Still no joy.

(Sorry 'bout the length. I'll figure out how to keep the Plasma desktop and powerdevil from cluttering up the logs with truly pointless debugging messages. Someday.) BTW, that MAC address is that of the Netgear router.

The wifi router is working just fine (in case anyone asks) as I and others are able to get on the 'Net using their mobile phones and other laptops.

Ideas about debugging this?

Is this the experience that winds up driving me AWAY from continuing as an OpenSUSE user? (It's been a long ride--since the 4.x days--but maybe it's time to get off.)

TIA for any help...

Wireless hardware details please?
Code:
lspci -nnk|grep -iA3 net
The logs are reporting that authentication and association is ok, but the following messages could indicate some issue with wpa_supplicant or a regression with the driver perhaps?
Code:
wlan0: deauthenticating from 84:1b:5e:d8:f2:0f by local choice (Reason: 3=DEAUTH_LEAVING)
Code:
2019-04-07T13:31:31.808953-05:00 linux-ftl7 kernel: [13437.525761] b43-phy0 warning: Forced PIO by use_pio module parameter. This should not be needed and will result in lower performance.

Examining the boot.msgs file showed that there were missing firmware files for the Broadcom chipset. After tracking those down and getting them installed I was able to get connected to the local wifi service.
Can you be specific about the firmware you installed? Did you use 'install_bcm43xx_firmware' (via the 'b43-fwcutter' package)?

Anything unusual returned via the following command?
Code:
dmesg|egrep "b43|firmware"
If you don't get any progress with this issue here, I'd suggest casting your net wider and post the issue in the openSUSE Forums as well.

Update:

In an effort to retrace my steps--since I didn't have an image of the working system from before the application of the 600+ patches--I wiped the 20190320 installation and re-installed afresh. For a while, that is. For whatever reason, while re-installing from the install DVD I'd made from the downloaded ISO, after getting about five minutes into the download/install phase, I began getting a lot of popups w/ "Skip/Abort/etc." dialogs about "suspect" packages that I hadn't seen during the previous install. I aborted the install and, rather than potentially recreate the headache that resulted in this thread, I noticed that a newer release ISO was now available ("20190403") and installed from that. Following the installation--successful in that there were no odd popups about suspect packages--I extracted the B43xx firmware files from the "noarch" RPMs available over at https://old-en.opensuse.org/HCL/Netw...oadcom_BCM43xx (the article contains links that take you over to the Packman repository). After creating a connection to the local WiFi hardware... Voila! Working wireless. (These are the same RPMs used in the 20190320 install.)

I have not gone through any post-installation application of patches that have come out since 20190403 (i.e., "zypper dup"). In other words, I'm where I was after the "20190320" install where wireless was working and before the distribution update. I've made a backup of the now working system and will be watching for new patches to become available before kicking off that "zypper" command. With that in my back pocket I should be able to recover from another wireless failure such as the one that followed the 20190320 installation + distribution-update.

Ferrari:

In answer to your question about versions: The Packman RPMs I installed the firmware from were:

b43-firmware-4.174.64.19-3.2.noarch.rpm

and

b43legacy-firmware-3.130.20.0-lp150.3.1.noarch.rpm

I did not use the "install_bcm43xx_firmware" script. I have, though, manually used "b43-fwcutter" in the past on a Slackware install. I assume the script somewhat automates the process I did by hand.

I, too, noted that odd message about the PIO mode. I'll follow up on that (module option tweak?). I'm not too worried about the performance hit though knowing that it's out there is going to bug me now.

Cheers...
