I'm gonna buy a used laptop (over 70 to choose from).. My Q is. What is the minimum specs i should look for to comfortably run and experiment with fiesty .. Sorry i'm real new to linux. Thanks ahead
Edit: Sorry, the first answer I found was really old. This is from Wikipedia:

System requirements
The current Ubuntu release, 7.04, requires 256 megabytes of RAM, and, when installed to the hard disk, requires at least four gigabytes of hard-disk space if installed as the usual Desktop installation. The Server installation requires 64MB of RAM and 500MB of hard disk space.
I didn't use more than 5 minutes to search for it, but I couldn't find anything in the official Ubuntu documentation. Google came up with some results, but I couldn't view the page. Try Google the next time you have a question, you might find an answer
Basically, just look for 256megs of RAM. Any laptop with 256megs of RAM will satisfy any other requirements.
Good luck, though...depending on the pool of laptops you're looking at, maybe NONE of them will have 256megs of RAM! If you're willing to experiment with a less heavy linux distribution and don't mind sluggishness, a typical laptop with as little as 128megs could do.
If you're willing to experiment with a VERY basic desktop, a lot of manual configuration, a lack of niceties like USB thumbdrive automounting, and a more challenging learning curve, then 64megs can be sufficient.
If it's going to be a "guinea pig" laptop, you should also plan to need more resources in the future. It seems that pretty much every distribution is getting more resource hungry as the years go by. I agree that 256MB RAM and a 6 GB hard drive would be about the minimum. (Remember, you can often add more RAM if the existing laptop is "marginal" in that area.) I also suspect that a processor slower than 500 MHz would be frustrating to use with most modern distributions. You probably want to look for 1 GHz and up.
Thanks ,, Now I know where to start.. Dual booting just doesent work for me. right now at least. I only plan on spending about 40.00 dollars for a laptop to play with ,, it is all for learning
