Is there any particular reason that you chose backtrack? I would install Kali Linux on your laptop instead since it is the more stable successor of backtrack. http://www.kali.org/
R3 is also considered obsolete version. The back | track site recommends back | track 5 as the stable version and suggests to install this instead of R1, R2 or R3, but I'd agree with Nbiser, get Kali Linux, it's the newer version and is stable.
