external screen problem

when I start the x-server using my external monitor on my IBM T23
I am not able to watch videos (xine) with the default video driver.
I have to change the xine video driver from "auto" to "xshm" no other driver is working.
The problem is I am not able to watch in full screen mode because it's getting real slow.

The interesting thing is that starting the x-server before switching to
the external screen (using the one of the notebook) results in everthing
working fine even on the external one but there is the problem with the resolution limit of 1024x786.

It seems that the x-server is using a different driver or something when
started using the external screen. So how do I tell the x-server to use the settings it does if started on the laptop's screen???

thanks, jan
