Cool dual boot problem RH9 and XP

Hi all,
I am having problem booting to both OS after installing winXP and RH9 thereafter.. I am using Acer 2001 wide screen notebook and no floppy drive

I have partition my drive as follows:
hda1 - winxp
hda2 - /boot
hda3 - /
hda4 - swap

I have chosen GRUB as the bootloader and chose /dev/hda3 First sector of the boot partition.

Can anyone pls help?

max

What's the problem? Can't you boot one of them? Which one? Post you /boot/grub/menu.lst so we can see.

Then you didn't install Grub on the Master Boot Record, the first sector of the hard drive.

Did you happen to install RH9 first then XP? If you did you will need to either reload RH9 or do some real fiddleing to get grub to be the install on the boot sector. Winders is not smart enough to "see" other OSs.

Before you go through the re-install of RH9. See if the RH9 disk gives you the option of repairing Red Hat. You should be able to do a custom repair where you can just repair the boot-loader(grub). That will re-write the MBR so you can access the Grub and thus choose your OS.

You may be able to use the XP boot manager (or whatever it's called) to boot Redhat 9. To do so, you'll need to boot into Redhat using your install disk (type linux rescue after the boot) then use the instructions found at http://www.geocities.com/epark/linux...w2k-HOWTO.html.

What this will entail is to make a copy of your /boot partition to a file (i.e. dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/mnt/floppy/linux.bin bs=512 count=1) and copying this to the XP side for access. If you don't have a floppy, you'll either need to mount the Windows C:\ drive (not an option is NTFS) or FTP the file somewhere.

Also, your /boot partition may be too far down the drive if you elected for a large XP partition. If that's the case you may need to use a partition utility to resize everything first.

Hope this helps.
