Question Configuring Ext. modem on Lindows 4.5

I have been trying to configure my external modem I just bought for my laptop since I couldn't get my Conexant ACLink 56K to be recognized. I'm not sure how to go about it or what commands to enter. Any help would be appreciated. I have also posted this on the Linspire forum. This is my first foray into Linux and it has been rough, to say the least. I am wanting to get my laptop switched over to Linux and cut the ties to MS. I have a HP Pavillion ze5620us with a Pentium 4 - 2.6Ghz, 60GB hard drive and 512MB RAM. Size and speed are not the issue. Thanks for your help.
