ASUS ROG Strix GL502 - graphics, wifi and mouse/touchpad problems

Hi,

I bought new laptop ASUS ROG Strix GL502:
- Intel Core i5-7300HQ
- 8 GB (SO-DIMM DDR4, 2400MHz)
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 + Intel HD Graphics 630

I made dual boot: Windows 10 + Mint 18.3 Cinamon.
On Windows everything works perfectly, but on Mint I have several problems:

1. Wifi.
I am connected to my home network, but browsers have problem to load any pages.
When I check connection on some speed test pages the result is that most of time speed is 0, sometimes grow up to ~130kb, sometimes grow up to ~15Mb, and again to 0.
I read many other posts, I tried to disable 11n, switch off power saving etc - but nothing helps.

2. Random freezes.
Every few moments the mouse freeze on ~1s. When I checked "htop" I observed that cpu's random core usage grow up to 100% for ~1s and go down to almost 0%.
It definitely makes work impossible.

3. Graphic cards.
I installed NVIDIA drivers using Driver Manager (with ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa repository).
I can work on Nvidia card, but when I switch to integrated Intel HD Graphics 630 and reboot I get black screen freeze - then I need to reboot with "nomodeset" param and change card back to NVIDIA. This results in short battery life.
I also tried to install last version of NVIDIA driver manually (downloading driver form nvidia web page) - but in this case I cannot also boot - always freeze on boot.

4. Touchpad
I cannot use touchpad because cursor first start to jump on the screen, and after a few seconds cursor freeze at place and touchpad not respond.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks

I think most issues may be fixed with a custom kernel and custom setup.

I'm not sure if mint is the right choice for new hardware. I'm not sure if there is any binary distro out there were your "hybrid graphics" notebook will work out of the box.

and linux mint is problematic for wifi, i saw it on very dated msi-cr700 notebook here too.

networkmanager have or had some issues in my point of view, and most binary distros uses that piece of software which I do not usually.

Suggestion: You may test another binary distro if you want to to see if another distro works better out of the box!

Note: I would never buy a Hybrid graphics notebook. as i see microlags and this does not work in windows 10 on different notebooks, e.g. msi gamer notebook, several different intel gpu based lenovo business notebooks. the culprit in my eyes is the intel gpu, or the intel gpu passthrough feature on those hybrid notebooks. It has a reason why some decent game notebooks have only nvidia gpu hardwired to the output, like asus g75vw, several clevo notebooks and a few selected others. i get over 3 hours of battery life out of my 70 percent battery for my dated asus g75vw. The intel gpu driver is very bad and very limited because of the hardware. that is my opinion. I had myself for many years an intel gpu based notebook and know by now what a pain it is.
You also see guys selling intel nucs, because the intel gpu can not play several different youtube videos. the hardware is not capable for several video formats. same with those brix boxes or what they are called, similar as those intel nucs.
Just saying intel gpu based notebooks, even when it is passthrough is problematic. and when it does not work properly in windows 10 for several years why should it work better in linux than?

The drivers you need aren't yet included with most distros. If you do a google search for "site:phoronix.com GL702ZC fedora" there's a post describing issues on the most recent versions of Fedora, which are fairly bleeding edge. It looks like Fedora 27 can work with some effort.

EDIT: I realize this is a different AMD based laptop but I mean it has similar issues.

Which distribution are you using?!
I have the "ASUS G75VX", what did you do to get your wireless working?!

I ended up purchasing a Linksys - AC1200 Dual-Band Wireless USB 3.0 Adapter. Best Buy said it was Linux compatible! When I inserted the device driver CD, all the drivers were for Windows!
No drivers for Linux!

I also ended up purchasing Windows 10 professional 64-bit, so I could utilize the hyper V features! I've got CentOS 7 installed within the VM in hyper V.
That way I could practice with Linux for my "System Administration Certification".

Eventually, I''d like to convert my laptop OS over to Linux. But for now, I'm content with Linux within a virtual machine.

It would be nice, to hear what you did with your laptop to getting your wireless working.

I'm a quadriplegic in an assisted living home… So having wireless set up is best and easiest for everybody.

Any kind of feedback/suggestions/ tips would be greatly appreciated! :-)

Thank you, in advance…

.
