amdgpu on oracle linux 7.8


hi all ,

i am not that much in linux , i have lenovo laptop with amd gpu [Radeon HD 8550M / R5 M230]

i installed oel 7.8 lately , i am wondering is amd gpu is configured properly , i found this command to check gpu



lshw -c video

now can you tell me if the amd gpu is installed and working properly or not ?

if not , is there a way to install it correctly?
sometimes the laptop fails to boot and give me message have word "radeon fails"
and sometimes after booting the laptop freeze.

i found this link to install amd on centos7.8

i followed the instructions but i got this message

Unsupported RPM-based OS: /etc/os-release ID 'ol'

any suggestions??

Oracle linux is not a distro one would tend to care a lot about video. It is a server distro. If you want to use your computer as a workstation or consumer computer I'd suggest a different distro. Oracle is distro based on Red Hat so I'd usually start there for searches for info. Centos is maybe a slightly closer clone of RH and usually has the exact same documentation.

thank you , but you didn't answer me , is the amd gpu installed correctly based on the former attached screenshot?

I have no idea, but for the second part of what you're asking...

That message says the software doesn't support Oracle Linux. (That's what "ol" refers to.)

Since Oracle Linux is (like Centos) a re-branding of RHEL, I wouldn't expect it to be a difficult change to make - you should contact AMD Support about this.

(It might be possible to change the ID in "/etc/os-release" and get it to install, but I don't know the ramifications of that and would only consider it as a last resort.)
