ACPI Tables Getting the Windows Keys to Work in Linux

So I was wondering about how Linux handles the specials keys like the Windows key that can change display lighting, network, multimedia, volume, etc...
And came across this command ls -l /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/ that shows the acpi tables.

But this is as far as I've gotten. How do I incorporate and use these tables to assign the keys in Linux ??

Or is there more functionality to just do things within Linux and don't bother using any of those special keys??

I've got an old Toshiba Satelite AMD A6 with GB RAM, that is running W10. It seems kind of slow, and thought I'd switch it to Linux, but I like having the W10 around for trying questionable software on W10. Maybe I'll run Virtualbox and run W10 in there.

Any info would be appreciated.

Howard

Depends on your window manager or desktop environment. Look at the docs for your distro and window manager to see where key bindings are made.

In 20 years I've never got involved with acpi tables and you certainly don't need them to do what you want to do!

The Windows key — proper name Super key — is used by some desktop interfaces but normally it's left for you to use for yourself. On my system, it's set for a whole lot of shortcuts like Super-c for a calculator and Super-b for a browser. Somewhere in your menu you should find a tool to configure the keyboard and that should enable you to set shortcuts. Built-in options (like Alt F1 for a menu) can be supplemented by your own, like
amixer set Master 10%+ to increase volume
vlc to launch the media player

The answer is always out there!
