I got three 17" monitors and three 15"inch monitors. And usually run my 17" at 1280x1024.. Wishing only they could handle 1600x1280, I would run them at that. 15" monitors only run on machines with no X so its all command line.. especially since one of them red has gone out...

erm.. good eye sight I suppose. The smaller the better for me, you can fit more windows on one screen and the graphics are more clean and not all choppy looking.
19" at 10x7 Not bad really, I have come to love it. I use to run larger 16x12 but it bugged me. So I brought it up a bit. Thinking about going back down for the same reason as Drew, want more stuff on my desktop
19" on the main machine, 1600x1200. After having that res, anything lower than that seems like a toy To make up for the potential eyestrain, I use pretty large fonts most of the time, and Fluxbox to cut down on the visual clutter. I tried 1900x1400 or whatever the next higher one my monitor supports is, but the low refresh rate became hard on the eyes - if not for that, I'd probably be running that res instead.
I'd really like to have a 21" or larger with that resolution or better, if possible. I love being able to have tons of stuff on the screen at once. That'll be the dream machine I get after I get a high-paying UNIX administration job! heh
Max resolution is the first thing I look at when shopping for monitors. Sure, it looks like a great deal to get a 17" monitor for like $120, but then you see the top res is 1024x768... seems like a waste of 17 inches.
Thanks guys for all your replies. Its quite interesting to see what monitors everyone uses, and also the refresh rates. I will say that on linux the desktop is much more configurable for small resolutions.
I know that with windows the systray and bottom bar become quite hard to see at 10x7 and lower..
I have a cheap refurbished 17" monitor that I bought from computergeeks last year for $50.00. It can only go up to 1024x768 no matter what kind of vid card I have running. It used to be an Apple Monitor (Apple logo scraped off even). I still don't see any reason to go out and buy a flatscreen or a 19" or 21" monitor yet.

Phew... I see no reason to buy a flatscreen, period. They have a *long* way to go before they're anything I want to buy. Hurts my eyes to look at them, and most seem to be pretty limited in resolution. Current models tend to remind me too much of the original Nintendo Game Boy... any movement at all causes massive blurrage and eyestrain. Besides, would I rather buy a 15" flatscreen, or a 19" CRT... lemme think...
When flatscreens are cheaper, easier on the eyes, and/or have higher resolutions than CRTs, I'll think about it. Waste of money right now
