Sound from speakers not from headphones

I have a HP dv9009nr with a

00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

I am running CentOS 4.4

The soundcard is detected fine, but when I connect headphones to either the standard jack or the hidef jack sound continue to come out of the laptop speakers and nothing from the headphones.

How do I correct this problem?

I have launched alsamixer but did not find anything related to headphones listed.

Sounds like a hardware issue to me, since certainly in the "old" days, the headphone plug would physically activate a switch to disconect the signal to the internal amp

I am currently dual booting Windows and Linux and when I boot into Windows it does switch off the laptop speakers when headphones are plugged into either output.
