Hi,
I posted originally at the security forum
h**p://ppp.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=247913
but now i consider the problem to be rather hardware, so i am posting here:
My Setup:
Slackware 10.0.0
Kernel:2.4.26
I have 2 hard drives, using reiserfs + RAID-1 (software mirroring)
It is a web server, which is co-located and i do not have direct access to.
I am runnung:Apache/2.0.52
PHP Version 4.3.9
I have also sshd and sendmail + a recent firewall.
I am pretty sure the machine is clean, the installation is pretty recent and everything is patched.
My problem is that the machine freezes occasionally.
I have noticed this 2 times, while working on the computer.
The first was doing bzip2 on a large file - 300 MBs
The second - while doing grep on a large file - 200 MBs
Both operations were on files on the /var filesystem, which is not on the raid
The guys at the ISP, where the machine is located tell it is dead, i can not ping it.
Can you give me some ideas on how to diagnose the problem, preferably without taking it off the collocation ?
I suspect HDD, Memory or processor fans
I have seen this occur also. I am using the same kernel as you, recompiled for SMP and ACPI. On a dual HT Xeon, reiserfs 3.5.
What I have seen is the unit completely freeze for about 15 seconds. This will sometimes happen twice a day that I am aware of. This same unit running Slack 9.1 never did this. Each time this has happened, I was not in a position to ping it or anything else from another unit.
To confirm that, I will load 9.1 on it tommorow and post back the results about this same time..
reloaded Slack 9.1 last night and recompiled for smp.
No problems noted in 4 hours of use.
Complete reload of Slack 10 and compile for smp just now. Will get back after several hours test.
On thinking about what I have seen, my keybord and mouse actions would not show on the display when my freeze happens. But, mouse movements made while the freeze was on, would catch up after the freeze ended. This may be a video problem with xorg here.
Another development observed.
Yesterday, i created the following script:
while true
do
date >> /var/log/netstat.log ;
netstat -p -a >> /var/log/netstat.log ;
sleep 10s ;
done
So i can see what happens at the moment of fialure.
The beginning of the /var/log/netstat.log file seems ok, but at the end i see some records, which are output from nother command i started
> top -b > /var/log/top.log &
So i observe files in the /var/log directory are messed up and start to think i could have filesystem or hard drive problem.
Any ideas ? Can i test while the system is running (i do not have direct access to the computer)

Slack 10 freezing
The same with me:
(... keybord and mouse actions would not show on the display when my freeze happens. But, mouse movements made while the freeze was on...)
I am almost all the day at the pc, so I can see ithappening a lot of times, like 10 times per day... :-(
Slack 10, kernel 2.4, reiserfs
Is that happening with someone who is NOT using reiserfs?
