Help with display not opening on boot

I was messing around in fstab trying to load some shares and I got a little crazy and
deleted my local user folder from the media folder. Not sure if this is relevant or not. After I deleted the file, now it won't boot goes to command prompt and asks for user and password, then goes to the error message "cannot open display". if I create a new user from terminal will that add the user to the media folder? I'm not even sure that is the problem, but boot problem started on the next reboot. BTW when in the terminal I tried opening firefox and it opened on the screen.

Please help
Roger

Since nothing you posted really makes any sense everything could be relevant. What distribution / version are you running? What do you mean by local user folder or media folder?

It is possible to mess up fstab enough that the system will not boot but since you can login from the command line that isn't the case. You should be able to edit the file from the command line to remove or comment out whatever you were messing with.

By convention /media if that is what you mean by media folder is typically where the system will automatically mount removable media like CD/DVDs or USB flash drives. Directories may be automatically created like /media/username/... When the flash drive is unmounted/ejected the sub-directories are deleted. /mnt is by convention where temporary filesystems are mounted but otherwise you can mount anything to just about anywhere on the system.

If you can run Firefox then I would guess the x server is still running but maybe not the desktop.
