Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Default to digital out for SB Live digital

I've been reading Alsa stuff and surfing here for hours and I find it really confusing. I have an SB Live digital board and I can get digital output from all KDE apps by using plug:spdif as my device. In the past, I was able to use aplay, presumably with aplay -D plug:spdif , but for some reason that isn't working now either.

What I want to do is get *everything* to output via digital, not just KDE apps. Everything else still comes out of the analog port. (Actually, I want everything to come out of both, but lets start with this first.)

So, I would think that since I have "spdif" as a plug device that this would work as an .asoundrc file:

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "spdif"
}

but no joy; I get:

aplay: main:533: audio open error: No such device

I've tried various permutations on this with various PCMs, all with no luck.

Here is the output of aplay -L. Can anyone give me a hand with this?

Thanks, Eric
