debian laptop?

I think I made a big boo-boo when I purchased my Gateway Solo 1400 laptop... built for Microsuck XP. I would like to put Debian r4 Potato on it.. (its the only distro I like) I was wondering if anyone has suggestions, comments, or maybe a how-to. Ive got the feeling I am shiznit out of luck here, but its worth the ask. please contact me a.s.a.p. Thanks
