ATI Radeon 9250 Mandriva 2005 LE XOrg problem

I am trying to install Mandriva 2005 LE. I have an on-board VIA UniChrome IGP and an ATI Radeon 9250 (PCI). The main monitor is plugged into the ATI and the BIOS is set to have the ATI card as the primary. During setup, I configured the display to use the ATI Radeon driver and everything seemed to work OK. Then, after installation, I rebooted and everything was still OK until X started. Now, I have an hourglass that does not stop, the top half of the screen is black, and the bottom half of the screen looks like a mangled bitmap image. Any ideas?

In case it makes a difference, I had installed XOrg with 3D acceleration during setup.

Thanks,
Evan

Newbee here:
But i have a 9250 working ok with mandriva 2005. 3d accel enabled as well.

Maybe disable the onboard video card in the bios (if not yet done)

Do a reinstall of mandriva (but then select the update version it will be faster)
Reboot then

Are you using the radeon driver. I would instead of the fglrx driver

Otherwise pressing I during the boot you can then prevent X from
starting and you can then edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and disable whatever is causing the problem
to do the edit you could use
vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I suppose you have tried vim before

(check the pci card is well inserted as well just in case, once more)

also cat /var/log/x.0.log | more
should help you to find what is wrong
