You can play .mpg /.mpeg files with `mplayer'. I'm not sure if there's a GUI for it or not (though I recall someone mentioning `gmplayer'). The stock RH8 install does not include any MPEG players. You can download one from www.freshrpms.net. Go to the Red Hat 8 section. If memory serves, `mplayer' had to be built from sources and there were libraries that you needed as well.

Good luck,

Rick

The long and winding road of mplayer. This package made my hair fall out for a while but with some help from this forum I got it working and its all worth it. The first place to look is the man pages.

man mplayer

Good Luck!

I would suggest installing apt for RPM from here :

http://psyche.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=244

along with the GUI called Synaptic:

http://psyche.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=552

And then when you run Synaptic and select mplayer for install, it will install any dependancies aswell................fantastic piece of software IMHO that takes away the dependancy nightmare

btw Mplayer has a gui.

Hope this is clear enough

if you want help then you need to give some information. how on earth are we meant to know what's happened??? copy the output of mplayer. and it's NOT hard to use... it just doesn't have a shiny front end, unless you use gmplayer

I'm closing this thread, you don't need two threads helping you with mplayer.
