using Bodhi

I have Ubuntu. I dont need any social network stuff, only a little
video player stuff and some audio cd burning stuff. Other than that
its just business,email,finance stuff.
Will Bodhi fit my bill??? I like the 550 mb size.

Hi.

Almost everything will fit

I like Bodhi and its philosophy, and use it for couple of years as a base for my system. I can make a few comments on it:
  • POSITIVE: It does not automatically install tons of useless dependencies. I do use some stuff from KDE suite but only required dependencies are installed.
  • NEGATIVE: Some packages in its own software repository have different versions than in respective Ubuntu repositories. It sometimes cause problems with upgrading or dependencies if you must use something beyond Bodhi's repository. AFAIR once they "improved" OpenOffice package and it was not easy to upgrade. Another problem is that some packages remain in older version while the upgrade is already available in Ubuntu or Debian. This is not a major issue for me, as I can always force the version I need, just to warn you not to be surprised.
  • NEUTRAL: The default Enlightenment desktop environment is very interesting, but after short trial I switched to XFCE, which is simpler.

I would not expect to have full system on 550MB. You will have minimal system after installation, and then you must download packages to meet your needs. That's Bodhi's philosophy - you have the choice what to download and how much to grow. My (fairly rich) system takes now about 8GB.

I would recommend Bodhi for someone, who has enough linux experience to choose which packages to install and where to find the stuff he needs.

You should read this:

They also recently had a new release, just couple of days back, some bug fixes I think.
