syslinux can't boot

I use syslinux to boot my system. But it can't mount root. The content of syslinux.cfg is:

default linux
prompt 1
timeout 15
label linux
kernel vmlinuz
append root=/dev/hda1 initrd=rootfs.gz

The system respond "kernel panic : No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel"

If I change "root=/dev/ram0" to "root=/dev/hda1", then it response "kernel panic : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 03:01"

Please tell me how to correct it thanks.

where does your kernel load?

you need (i think) to load both kernel AND initrd.img ... no?
