Question Optimize boot process? on RedHat9.0

Im new to linux but Ive been toying around alot In huge book on linux Red Hat 9.0, and i saw a few things in there on how to speed up your boot process.

What i am wanting to know thought is: Where do you go to take out processes from before you get to the LOG IN screen?

I don't know what the area of the particular boot process is called but it looks something like:

ex.
initiating eth0..........................................[ok]
initiating "other crap"................................[ok]
initiating "even more crap".........................[ok]

what is the above process called and how can i determine what gets started?

PS The reason i ask the question is that I know that the eth0 is for the NIC card but i dont have the INTERNET so i want to remove this process and others

Check your init.d directory in /etc

This is where most of the apps will be listed to start on boot up, etc.

Get familiar with the chkconfig command.
