open ports

is there a command that shows which ports are active or open?

try man netstat - i guess it's what u're looking for
netstat -an
if i remember correctly (cant test it right now)
ps -al
should return all running processes and their ports

nmap -sT -O localhost
If you see something suspicious you can check it with
netstat -anp | grep xxx
where xxx is the number of the port you want info on.
