Can not install Ubuntu Xubuntu [ Legacy system can I raise the dead?]
For over a month I have been trying to install Xubuntu on my HP Compaq running Windows 10 Pro operating system. The BIOS Mode is legacy and Secure Boot state is not supported. (See system information below.) These two items need to be stressed: 1) There is no UEFI, I am not saying that it is disabled; I'm saying it is not there - was not included with the operating system. 2) I can not get Xubuntu (or Ubuntu) to install. When I power up the computer and boot from the USB the option screen appears. The counter begins to count down, if it reaches 0 I get a dark screen of code - the word that stands out is panic - can provide the code if needed. If I select one of the options the dark screen of code appears. Originally, I started by trying to install Ubuntu, this resulted with the dark screen of code, not even the option screen. Thought that could be because of my limited RAM, so I moved on to Xubuntu. Now I am going to try and install grub on this HP Compaq running Windows 10 Pro, keeping in mind that my BIOS Mode is legacy and there is no UEFI. Where should I install grub? Is this a good idea? Am I close or off in the wrong direction? Thanks for your time, and any help or assistance.

how is this thing (it was a "lightweight" desktop model 10 years ago) even running windows 10? that can't be good.
i know it's not what you asked, but i'd just nuke windows and go full linux.
it should run Xubuntu just fine.
It has Intel Q33 Express Chipset, which may be the root of the problem. From what I'm finding so far, nobody is having success with Latest Buntus and this chipset. There are Linux drivers available for install, but likely for distributions of the past.
My HP 5800 system is slightly young than his, but also 10 years old. Since yesterdays update from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 I face the same Kernel Panic message he get, but I can still boot Kernel 4.4.0.
Doing so inxi -Fxz gives the following output:
In fact the system profiler lists 82Q33 Express as Host Bridge, PCI Bridge and Communication controller.
Using Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 LTS it was running smoothless for years.
Is there no compatibility check in apt-get dist-upgrade?
the word that stands out is panic - can provide the code if needed.
That would help to see what is happening. Maybe at the menu press e and add "noapci nomodeset" to the end of the line that starts with linux without the quotes
