Pls. help me with Lucent Modem Suse 9.1

I installed my Lucent modem (Digitan LT WinModem) in a Suse 9.1 (download version) linux box and Yast2 did find it. I tried to configure it so system requested I install ltmodum driver package. I downloaded it from here:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/upd...-38.5.i586.rpm
and installed it. I configured my modem and everything was ok but when I try to call my ISP I get the following:
SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.16 on linux.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd
connect to smpppd
Status is: disconnected
Status is: connecting
pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded.
pppd[0]: Failed to open /dev/ttyLT0: No such device or address
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: Serial port open failed (exit code 7)

I checked the /dev/ttyLT0 and found it there. However, I noticed that the Lucent models were not installed in /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.95-default or /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.95-smp as the norm with other modules but in /lib/modules/2.6.5-override-debug, /lib/modules/2.6.5-override-bigsmp, /lib/modules/2.6.5-override-default and /lib/modules/2.6.5-override-smp.

Then I copied the two modules ltmodem.ko and ltserial.ko to the /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.95-smp/extra folder and did
depmod -a

but when I do:
modprobe ltserial
or
modprobe ltmodem
I get the following:

FATAL: Error inserting ltmodem (/lib/modules/2.6.5-7.95-smp/extra/ltmodem.ko): Invalid module format

Does any body know why this is happening? and why modem was not configured correctly?

I have another modem which is PCTell with Rockwell chip (not Conexant). It was recognized by Yast2 and configured it but did not work also. Does any know what to do to get it working?

Sorry, I have no solution for your first problem. Please post the errors from your second modem's connection (probably from /var/log/localmessages). Start up kppp, do its setup and have a look at the dialoge during connection attempts...

Good luck .

Thanks. I got my Lucent modem working in SuSE 9.1 (kernel 2.6). I used the above package along with the drivers built by ltmodem-2.6-alk-4 package. By the way, I got it working in both Fedora Core 2 and Mandrake 10 too.

I'm getting the exact same error when I try to connect to the net.

I'm a total Linux newbie and I could do with a step-by-step set of instructions to help me get my modem working.

How did you get it working?

Chucky

Hi

I am sorry for late reply. I did the following:

1- Obtained the source code for the driver from this site:
http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/...-8.31a7.tar.gz
http://ltmodem.heby.de/
2- Obtained the ltmodem.xxxxxxxx.rpm from SuSE site.
3- Built my kernel sources
4- Built the driver source I mentioned in step 1. This step will create the driver modules for the modem (files with ko extention).
5- I installed the rpm file I mentioned in step 2.
6- I made a new directory in /lib/modules/(my kernel) and named it ltmodem
7- I copied all the ko files produced by building the source to the directory I created in step 6.
8- I did :
$ depmod -a
9- I went to Yast and did the configuration.

and that's it.

PS. In order to build your kernel and the source you need to install 3 things:
1- make
2- gcc
3- qt3

You can get all of them from the popular site : rpm.pbone.net/

Thanks god, I found an easier solution. All you need to do is just download and install this rpm:
ftp://fr.rpmfind.net/linux/SuSE-Linu....2-36.i586.rpm
If you upgraded your kernel to kernel-default 2.6.5-7.104 then download and install the following rpm in addition to the one above:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/upd...i586.patch.rpm
That's it.
