mouse wheel not working

Hi, I am using Scientific Linux(CERN)4 HP Compaq dx2480 Business PC with an optical mouse. The mouse wheel is not working, I mean I cannot scroll the doccuments using the mouse central wheel. So I look for /etc/X11/xorg.conf file there I have found this:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"

I hvae changed IMPS/2 to PS/2, xplorerps/2 but still the same thing. Can anybody please help me in this matter ? Thanks in advance.

You can try variations of protocol and device
Quote:
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
According to the tip in Mouse administration of your distro, you can select "Generic - Wheel Mouse" to enable the mouse wheel

Hi sorry for the late reply. I have tried all possible protocols, options, devices but that didn't work. I have also used the system-config-mouseand select generic wheel mouse with PS2, but that also doesnot work. The only thing that has happened is my computer become slow so i have to change back. Anyway thanks for your help.

With regards,
Biplab Bijay.

Do you know that the hardware is working? Have you tried using this mouse on another system or an known-good mouse on this system?

Yes I have tried it. In my machine suse11.0 is installed along with Scientific Linux. The mouse wheel is working in suse11.0 but not in Scientific Linux.

Why don't you use the mouse settings in Suse xorg.conf with the Scientific Linux xorg.conf?

Is there something logged in /var/log/Xorg.0.log regarding mouse?
Maybe you should check your distro for a newer mouse driver, or if available use the evdev driver

The log is ok. It looks like you still use the Emulate3Buttons option but I don't think this is the reason for the problem with the mouse wheel.
Could you try the evdev driver if it's available for your distro?
Run (as root):
Code:
modprobe evdev
and if it not complain, make a backup of xorg.conf and edit it using
Code:
Driver "evdev"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/eventX"
replacing the respective lines in mouse section.
Mind that X is a number and you can find it by running:
Code:
grep mouse /proc/bus/input/devices
In my case the above command gives:
Quote:
H: Handlers=mouse0 event4
so X in my case is 4 and the above line in my xorg.conf reads "Option "Device" "/dev/input/event4""

Hi,

Be sure that at the top of your 'xorg.conf' you have;

Quote:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" <<<<< This
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
Then look at;

Quote:
sample mouse section;

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
EndSection
Your 'xorg.conf' should have something close to the above.

Hi bathory when i type the "modprobe evdev" as root it says "bash: modprobe: command not found".I will try to install that driver. Can you send me a link from where i can get it ?

Hi Gary the top of my xorg.conf file looks like this

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "single head configuration"
	Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
	InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
	InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
Should I replace "single head configuration" by "X.org Configured" in the second line ?

I hvae tried the following options also.

Code:
 Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
EndSection

But the problem remains as it was.
