What is the most stable (FREE) server distro?

well stability is defined by the least stable piece of it... if you run dodgy software or manage it badly, then a generic track record will count for nothing. In general debian or redhat / centos would be the usual suspects.

Ditto what Chris said. Any of those are a GREAT place to start at least.
