Theres an icon that looks like a signal bar and when i right click 'enable networking' and 'enable wireless' are both ticked. Is there a way I can show you a screen shot of the wireless section?
If you click on the icon I mentioned you'll see a drop down menu, listing Wired Network (to which you are connected now I assume), Wireless Networks (disconnected) and Available. Do you see your wireless network listed? Or any other for that matter?

That's when you click the right mouse button. Click the left mouse button to show the menu I refer to in the other post. I don't know how you take screenshots just like that in Ubuntu.
Woo I'm wireless!! Haha. Thankyou so much I really appreciate the time you've spent helping me And if you ever have any health and social care related problems you let me know!
You're welcome, it's been a pleasure helping you on your way with Linux. I'm glad you got it working. Luckily at the moment I don't have any health or social care related problems, but if they come up I'll be sure to contact you. Have fun using Linux.
Also, if you consider your problem/question solved please mark this thread as such using the Thread Tools.
One last question, when I was on windows there was various features for my laptop such as dell webcam, dell bluetooth centre etc. is it possible to get those back or were they a vista thing?
The things you refer to are typical programs Dell installs with Vista. Of course since they are typical for Windows they're not available as such on Linux. But,.... There are great alternatives for the programs you refer to available for Linux. For example to name one, if your webcam is an UVC one, then you could install GUVCView. And I'm sure there are lots of tools for Bluetooth too. You can open a separate thread for those things.
For example if you want MSN messenger, install aMSN, it's a great product, I use it too. Skype is also available, with full video support (if your webcam is configured correctly), and so on.

kamon;
Glad to see you got things working.
At this point, I would advise you to take the time to explore a bit, learn to use the package manager, etc.
This thread is known to all of us as "how to get Broadcom wireless working". For a new question, please start a new thread.
