Something to find out why the net is sooo slow.
Also when I got that machine, I copied stuff from the old machine via a switch (that I used for connecting 3 machines into one company line = it worked well, and still does), and that was the first time I realized that the net was terribly slow. from about 500 kBps to 150 kBps.

But why...
And could something be done...

Network issues can be:

- Bad or worn network cables.
- Using a Hub in the network rather than a Switch or Router.
- Older network card with limited throughput. (I recommend 300MBps or higher for PCIe, USB, or PCI)
- Unauthorized access point stealing bandwidth.
- Servers need an expansion to spread the load-balancing.

No real distribution will really target that.

That was Windows 8.1.
About the possible causes:

My windows 7 laptop in the next cable connector works fine, so it's not the network.
Speestest.net gives 563.44 Mbps / 210.14 Mbps for the T400 laptop and 577.73 Mbps / 1.28 Mbps (yes, no decimal errors) for the Win 8.1 Desktop (HP with i7-3770, would tell better if I recalled, or found some program that shows it). With dual-booted Mint 16 there are no such problems.
Normally, there is a line from a wall socket to a gigabit switch (zyxel) on my table, and from the ports of the switch there are lines to the computers. Tried with direct lines to two different wall sockets (dropped the switch) but no difference.
And look at the difference between the T4oo and HP desktop uplink speeds!

Also I don't recall experiencing the low speed on the HP when using the dual-boot Mint nor on the T400 when using Windows 7.
