Gnome incredibly slow

Hi

my gnome desktop used to be nice and fast.
But for some time now, when i work for more than ~15 minutes, it gets incredibly slow.
Starting a program takes at least 20 seconds.

Once they are running, they work fine and my command line is as fast as it always was.

I have no idea where this problem comes from, but it's extremely annoying.

Thanks in advance for every hints.

shn

PS: I'm using Gentoo, 2.6.20 and gnome 2.16.2

Edit: I have just installed xfce and the problem didnt go away...

Check your system (try typing top at the CL) and see what it's doing. Could be memory, could be cpu. With top or something like it you may be able to find the process that is hanging things up or see how heavily you are using your swap drive.

There has been similar experiences, especially regarding the 15 minutes thing and the incredibly slow part, that's what tipped me off to mention what others found to be their problem. It had to do with an IRQ conflict, and the two people that had this happening had ndiswrapper or something for their ethernet or wireless card. That could just have been a coincidence. Just switching pci cards around in different slots did the trick.

Just a suggestion.
