Up2Date

I installed FC3 the other day and ran/installed all the available updates. I have now got the red exclamation mark down at the bottom of my screen - when I click on it, there are about 8 updates available.

But when I click on Launch up2date and enter my root password and go through the RedHat update agent, these updates don't show as being available. any ideas.

the channels showing are;

fedora-core-3
updates-released-fc3

yum channel fedora-core-3 from http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/3/i386/os/

up2date

I am also facing a similar problem. It only works when you type up2date command on a terminal. I also have fedora core 3 installed on a machine connected to a very slow internet link and would like to update it. Is it posible to download these updates to a storage media and do the updates manually? If there is any one who may have done it or know how to do it, please help me.

I wont pretend to know a lot about linux. But I have had a number of people recomend that I use yum to update instead of up2date. First update your yum.conf file find it here and then simply type yum update

It works for me. Like I said though, I don't know a great deal about it. I was just told that it is a better and more reliable way of updating your system.

Good luck.

Hi,

I have done the YUM update as recommended - cheers for that.

and it has done some updates for me. But I am still getting the red exclamation mark for the Up2Date. Should I just close this and not use it - or can I install these particular updates manually using YUM? if so - how?

I've left my up2date icon running just so that I know when the updates are available. It should become a blue tick once you have run yum update
however sometimes i find that it needs to be right clicked and then click check for updates. Then it seems to correct itself.

I've done the right-click - check for updates, but the same 8 updates are showing. Do these need adding to YUM? sorry not totally got my head round the yum / up2date thing

It should be fine then. Have you replaced you yum.conf file with the one given by http://www.fedorafaq.org/
Look at question 3 under Getting and Installing Software it should explain everything there. If not, a more experianced user will need to explain what to do.

./usr/stevo: Go to a fedora mirror (http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html), manually download one of the eight updates to /var/spool/up2date and try installing it (i.e., rpm -iv ...). You should get an error message at some point that explains the problem (e.g., like the update is already installed).

Sorry (and thanks) Simian - missed your last thread, I have now installed the latest yum.conf file and run yum update and now all my packages are up-to-date.

Thanks everyone else for your help - much appreciated

SteVo
