Upgrade Borked My System! Need Help!

Currently i am logged in as root in KDE. Nothing else works. I need some help really bad now. Your help would be EXTRAORDINARILLY appreciated.

Here is what i did:

After running Debian Testing for the last year or so, i decided it was time to upgrade the system. The last time i did this some things broke so it scared me off from trying it again. Well i did it anyway. I went all through apt-get dist-upgrade and upgraded the entire system to the new Testing packages. That's when things went really bad.

The first problem is that X wouldn't start. The error messages indicated that the nvidia_drv.so was the problem ("uninterpreted symbles" or some such thing).

So i then tried to upgrade my nvidia drivers. Got the latest from online and tried to install. Wouldn't work. (couldn't compile the driver for my kernel 2.4.24).

So i decided i would try to upgrade to kernel 2.6 while i was upgrading things. I've never been able to successfully upgrade my kernel, but a simple "apt-get" installed kernel 2.6.15-1-k7 for me this morning. It works perfectly (As far as the system goes). But X still won't start. Nvidia drivers would not compile for this new kernel either (maybe it's too new?). Nor could i use Debian-packaged nvidia drivers (only good up to kernel 2.6.14-2)

So i reverted xorg.conf back to the generic "nv" drivers. Well that worked. I at least got X running and a kdm login screen.

Now the biggest problem: i can log in as root, but not as any other user. From the kdm login, if i choose my user name and type in my password, it authenticates, the screen goes black, and the login screen pops back up again! Grrrrr... This happens regardless of what environment or window manager i pick.

Any idea what causes this to happen? Where can i start looking?

On a related note, is there a good way to "downgrade" a package? I use enlightenment normally and the newest enlightenment seems to be buggy. I would also like to get my nvidia drivers installed so i would like to possibly use an older kernel but i don't know how to install anything but the latest versions that apt offers me.

Thanks for your help. I'll take whatever i can get!

A look at your xorg.log may shed some light on why you can't start it as a normal user. You might also try renaming ~/.kde

To select a specific version of a package
apt-get install pakage-name=version

Provided the version you want is in a repository in your sources.list

nvidia drivers are pretty easy.

Just
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-source nvidia-kernel-common module-assistant linux-headers-`uname -r`
cd /usr/src
m-a a-i nvidia
dpkg -i nvidia-kernel-`uname -r`*.deb

also get the kernel headers for your version.
apt-get install kernel-headers-2.6.15-1-k7

I got the logging-in thing mostly fixed. Seems that one of the hidden files in the home directory is conflicting with something. Not sure which one yet, but i will find out shortly.

I tried that and it worked, but it still won't start X properly. I'm still using "nv". The above commands all executed without any errors so apparently they installed, but still don't work. The error log shows this (abbreviated):

Tried that. There is nothing left to upgrade.

I uninstalled XFree86 with no problems. I then tried to install nvidia-glx. Installing that requires you to remove xserver-xorg and vice-versa. They are mutually exclusive it would seem. So i'm out of ideas now. Any further insights? I've appreciated your help so far.

I did get my sound working again, though. I had to reinstall all the ALSA packages. I also seem to have fixed the font issues (?)

It does not depend or conflict with xserver-xorg, not sure why it would try to remove it.

try apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg and see if that cleans up the dependency problems...
