Another thought, which is what I do, is to enjoy DSL on a virtual machine (or older hardware) and recreate it as best we can on your host machine with a netinstall .iso of a modern distro, i.e., install just the base system of Debian or Ubuntu (I use Trisquel instead of vanilla Ubuntu because why reinvent the wheel) and then (sudo) apt-get install what you will actually use.
You might have to track down some dependencies to get everything working and make some substitutions, but it's a valuable experience and a fun project.
