Getting iOS 10.x working with Slackware 14.2

Posted 03-10-2017 at 06:54 PM by kingbeowulf
Updated 06-10-2017 at 05:26 PM by kingbeowulf (Updates)

The version of libimobiledevice-1.2.0 released Jan 28, 2015 and shipped with 14.2 stable is too old to support plug and play for newer iDevices. IPhones, etc will generate a mount or access error. For my work iPhone, I usually just want to dump photos and video. There are patches and workarounds - such as using iCloud. Just goes to show that in 2 years much changes in the mobile device space. There has been dead silence on requests for upstream to push a new release. For example: https://github.com/libimobiledevice/...ice/issues/456

I noticed on https://github.com/libimobiledevice/libimobiledevice that many of the patches etc had been pushed upstream. So I pulled the git master on Feb 26 2017 and created a tarball named libimobiledevice-20170226.tar.xz and edited the original slackbuild in sources/l/libimobiledevice:
Code:
PKGNAM=libimobiledevice
VERSION=${VERSION:-20170226}
BUILD=${BUILD:-1ewk}
The resulting package works well for my iPhone 6s iOS 10.2.1. In fact now, in Xfce, 2 icons pop up: "<name> iPhone" and "Documents on <name>" with all the app directories (pretty much useless), as seen in attached screen shot.

Files and packages are here: http://www.koenigcomputers.com/ while I upgrade the box for linuxgalaxy.org to 14.2.

Update: As confirmed by clavisound's comment, and I had forgotten to mention here, iOS 10.3.2 and my iPhone 6s is again functional, as is a 5C. Also working here is an ipad mini 4 32GB (iOS 10.3.2). So the recent glitch was an issue the Apple addressed in the recent updates.

    So far, iOS 10.3.1 also works with this update, and thunar now lost those funky entries in the original screen shot.

    Nuts. The iphone 5c just updated and now longer works. Same iOS as the 6s; same desktop.

    Thank you, it works on iPhone 6, iOS-10.3.2.

    I think it's more user-friendly to provide the package, or better to tip Pat to provide this upgrade.
