debian update.

This is a relatively cautious procedure. More steps than you're used to but way less than a rescue. As a user with sudo privileges:

df -h / /var # check available space. Stop if space is low.
# This may report the same volume twice depending on whether /var has its own file system.

sudo apt update # get new package lists

sudo apt upgrade -d # check how much space it wants to use, then download...

simplest cron job for a lighting timer

Posted 12-05-2020 at 10:50 PM by clsgis

We're starting seeds to grow a winter/early spring vegetable garden. I set up LED grow lights on a relay module connected to a raspberry pi. It takes two wires from the GPIO header to the relay module and the following cron entries. The raspberry pi model zero W and a relay module were cheaper than a digital timer on Amazon, and I can reach them from anywhere via ssh. I made a "case" for the r-pi out of some old plastic box. It seemed silly to have that shipped from China.

not a device, a system

Posted 12-03-2020 at 01:47 AM by clsgis

I cannot bring myself to call a smartphone a "device." Crowbars, paring knives, chimneys, rubber bands, and transistors are devices. A smartphone is a system. It's probably running a Linux kernel.
