Notepad would be fine for some things, but on Linux, Leafpad is probably the closest alternative.

I also used Vim for a long time, almost eleven years and still do use it because it simply suits my programming languages needs.

For programming I prefer geany.

I nearly voted for vim, because I do quite like it and invested a bit of effort into become competent (not expert, but competent) with it, but decided I should vote for the one I use most often day to day, which is Kate.

elvis. I tried nearly every editor on that list and nothing matched the easy of use as elvis.
Oké, elvis lacks decent UTF-8 support and active maint, but it is *still* better fitting my needs than vim/gvim.

I find elvis really difficult because it's almost vim but not quite. I keep stumbling over the differences. I suppose one day I should sit down and RTFM.
