14.2 on Dell Latitude E5410: .Xmodmap not implemented

All my systems re-map (switch) the left ctrl and caplock keys. They work because ~/.bash_profile includes the line, xmodmap .Xmodmap. Except, on the Dell Latitude E5410. I somehow fixed this problem when running 14.1/x86_64 but don't remember how I did this.

The laptop has a new SSD drive and a clean installation of 14.2/x86_64, but does not swap key functions when I start X (xfce4). It works when I enter 'xmodmap .Xmodmap' on the command line.

I am at a loss understanding why it works with a manual command line entry but not when the same command is the last line in ~/.bash_profile. Again, this happens only on this one host and I just upgraded the BIOS firmware to A16 from A11.

All ideas encouraged.

Hello,

Here is something that you can try : In Applications > Settings > Session and Startup, create a new entry with button "+ Add", then enter the right data in the dialog box :

Name = xmodmap-E5410
Description= switch keft ctrl and capslock keys
Command = xmodmap -e "keycode code1=keysym1" -e "keycode code2=keysym2" ...

Click OK, then restart Xfce.

phenixia2003,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction for a solution.

While your syntax did not work, I looked at the working server's startup application and saw that it was, 'xmodmap -e xmodmap keys.txt'. Well, I don't have a keys.txt file on the laptop (can't find it on the server/workstation, either!) so I used 'xmodmap -e xmodmap .Xmodmap' and this works. Now the key functions are switched when I start X.

Much appreciated,

Rich
