I'm completely new to Linux though... I'm not new to computers.
I am what u can call a 'Power User'.
Being a computer oriented architect I Mainly deal with 3D Graphics software. Autocad, 3D Max, Revit are my main playground...
After struggling for years with windows and windows designed software with all the bugs and hazards that you can imagine-just because there are no other platforms that have an equivalent power software that can do the job for me- I am researching the possibility of having a Linux based software pipeline that can be used in the architectural/engineering industry, keeping in mind the possibility of developing my own software, although its a very long shot... but i think its worth a try cuz "AUTODESK REALLY SUCKS!"
I'm sniffing around the blender foundation products... seems that there are suggestions of implementing a BIM software based on their 'Blender' software.
Anyways.. wish me luck in my conquest... and any help or hints would be mostly welcomed.
Maya, although not FOSS, I believe runs on linux and is pretty good. I used it some back in my Winblows days. It would be more of a blender replacement not so much Autocad.
*Edit
Looks like it is a product of Autodesk. I don't remember that. although it's been since Maya 6 that I used it. So I guess you are not wanting to use more Autodesk products
Thanks for your replies i really appreciate everyone.
Bret.. yes .. Maya is indeed a powerful software, and it works well on linux, but since -as you said- it has become an autodesk product... It drove me away.. i wanna break free from Autodesk capitalism. And one more thing.. I am more interested in CAD-BIM software rather than pure 3D modeling ones like Maya or Blender; But unfortunately.. the open source world hasn't came up with such software yet. Blender has the advantage of being open source and extend-able at the same time with a pretty well designed 3d interface, making it a powerful potential development base.
raju.mopidevi thx man.. I already sniffed some of those.. promising apps.. ill keep looking through them
lee.. yeah.. its sweet alright.. but my needs are much more demanding.
Thanks all again.. I should tell you that I'm not an active blogger at all.. but i will try to keep up with you guys.
