I don't remember what kernel I started with. Would have been 1996/1997 timeframe. But didn't get my winmodem to work for a couple years so never got online with those early attempts.
Winmodem? Yikes. I avoided those like the plague. Fortunately, when I started using Linux I still had several modems sitting around from my Coherent and Consensys days where an external modem was needed for UUCP (blinkenlights were great debugging tools, informative, and fun). I actually still have a couple of external modems -- which is weird because we haven't had a land line for a while -- including an old 2400 baud Viva. It's just too darned stylish to part with.
Favorite kernel version? The first one to have SMP support that was no longer considered "Experimental". That spurred the purchase of my old dual Pentium Pro motherboard and a switch to run Linux full-time.
4.4, hands down. Somehow I see a pure white clean aura around that one. Boots smootly and flawlessly, the 5.x grumbles...but...possibly I did'nt set things right...
Hello,
In professional situations I use a well known version adapted for the software running on the machine ....
In "amateur" situations I try to use the last kernel available on the system version, I use today versions 6.7.9 on a test machine (Debian bookworm) and 6.6.13 on more "current" machines (all with Debian bookworm).
